Look within. Who are you? Who do you want to be? These are interesting questions in today’s day and age. We are told who to be, how to act, and what to do, from a very early age. Society and culture have a huge impact on us as well. We grow up and are not taught to question this programming (brainwashing) and then cannot figure out why we are unhappy and/or depressed.
I have answered the following questions for myself that helped me to get a bit clearer on who I want to be and how I show up for myself. As you dig deep and ask yourself some questions, you might be surprise at how easy it is to decide who you want to be.
1) What were you TOLD boys/girls were supposed to do? How to act? Who to be?
2) What did you infer from culture/society that girls/boys were supposed to act/be?
3) Do you like the above answers? Why or why not? Consider jettisoning what you don’t like about what you learned or were told boys/girls should be/act, etc.
4) What is something you always love doing, even when you are tired or rushed? Why?
5) What is your definition of play? What is really belly-laugh funny to you? Why?
6) If a relationship or job makes you unhappy, do you choose to stay or leave? Why? What keeps you there? Make a pro and a con list. How does it make you feel to stay? How does it make you feel to leave?
Who are you if you stay? Who are you if you leave?
7) What do you fear about leaving a bad job or a bad relationship? Why? What keeps you there? Make a pro and a con list. How does it make you feel to stay? How does it make you feel to leave? Is any of it really really true about staying or leaving?
8) What limitations do you put on yourself? Have you ever questioned what purpose those limitations serve? Why or why not?
9) What have you done in your life that you are most proud of? How does it make you feel?
10) What is the thing that you are second most proud of?
11) Who is your greatest role model? Why? What do you admire about him/her?
12) What is your definition of perfection? Is that even attainable? Why do you put that expectation on yourself? Others?
These are some tough questions that are meant to get you thinking and challenging yourself, your thought processes and in turn your behaviors so that you can consciously show up for yourself and others as your most authentic self.
There are no right or wrong answers, just what is true and authentic for you.
